ROCKFORD, Ill. -- The Rockford University men's basketball team was victorious over the Illinois Institute of Technology Scarlet Hawks on Wednesday evening.
The Regents got meaningful contributions from a lot of different players.
DeVon Oregon poured in a season-high 19 points to lead the team.
Cooper Jackson was a force, putting up 16 points and 11 boards.
Jaden Bell was his usual consistent self, chipping in 15 points with seven rebounds.
Donovan Grunloh also notched a career-high 11 points.
Rockford couldn't have started the game off any better, flying out to a 24-5 lead nine minutes into the game. Everything was falling for the Regents and nothing was going for IIT.
The Scarlet Hawks were able to chip away at the lead. They went on their own 8-0 run and started a parade to the free throw line. Illinois Tech was able to cut the lead to six with under two minutes to play in the half. Oregon's coast-to-coast layup to beat the buzzer gave RU a 41-30 halftime lead.
The Regents continued to shoot the ball well in the second half, taking an 18-point lead five minutes into the second half. Illinois Tech was able to stay in it, off the back of Garrison Carter, who finished with a game-high 25 points.Â
The deficit stayed between 10-15 for a good chunk of the period. Every time Rockford would strike, IIT would strike back.
Finally, time got the better of the Scarlet Hawks. They could never close the distance, as a final 12-5 scoring run for the Regents sealed the deal, 80-59.
The Regents conclude the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 21, when they head on the road to face Marian University at 3:15 p.m. CST.
