FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The Rockford University baseball team split a pair of games to Skidmore College in a doubleheader. Rockford won the first game 12-11 and lost its first game of the season 8-4 in the second game.
The Regents will return to action on Wednesday, March 11, against Skidmore College at 9 a.m. EDT.
Game One: Rockford 12, Skidmore 11
Marcus Taylor went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and one home run.
Blaise Mace had a solid game going 2-for-4 with four RBIs.
Preston Sewell had two hits going 2-for-4 and
Trent Lawrence homered hitting a key grand slam.
Logan Koeller got the start on the mound and pitched for just over three innings. He forced two strikeouts and allowed one earned run.
Carson Ritchie came in for Koeller at the bottom of the fourth allowing two hits, three runs, and striking one batter out.
Logan Bennett got the win for Rockford on the hill with one strikeout with one inning of work. Sydney Atkins tallied his second save of the year, closing out Skidmore in the bottom of the seventh.
The Thoroughbreds started off leading 5-0, scoring five unearned runs. The Regents made three errors in the first.
After two scoreless innings for Rockford, Mace got the Regents on the board with a two-RBI double. Taylor rounded out the scoring in the inning for Rockford with an RBI single.
The Regents tied the game at five in the fourth starting with an RBI walk from Mace, followed by a sacrifice fly from
Kadin Bergstrom at the top of the fourth.
An RBI single in the next plate appearance for Skidmore plated three runs as the Regents made two errors in the inning as the Thoroughbreds led 8-5.
Taylor homered to lead off the fifth for Rockford.
Skidmore scored three more runs in the bottom of the fifth, making it 11-6.
Rockford's comeback started in the sixth, as Taylor reached first on a fielders choice as Rockford was able to load the bases as a result of a throwing error to allow
Zach Fabis to reach second base. Lawrence then hit a grand slam to pull the Regents to within one, trailing 11-10.
Mace tied the game at 11 with an RBI single. Taylor gave the Regents their first lead with an RBI single as the Regents lead 12-11 heading into the bottom of the seventh.
In the final plate appearance for the Thoroughbreds, the Regents came together defensively to complete the comeback.
Game Two: Skidmore 8, Rockford 4
Marcus Taylor and
Trent Lawrence each batted 2-for-3. Lawrence had two RBIs while Taylor had one.
On the mound,
Ayden Smith worked four innings and allowed three earned runs off seven hits.
Brendan Fitzpatrick then stepped onto the mound in the fifth with just over one inning of action forcing one strikeout while allowing one run and three hits.
Joey Bisesi came in for Fitzpatrick in the sixth and was on the hill the rest of the game allowing three hits and two runs.
After one scoreless inning Skidmore put up four runs in the second inning.
Lawrence homered in the bottom of the second, as the Regents only scored one run in the inning.
Taylor scored in the third off a wild pitch to plate the second run of the game for Rockford.
In the fifth, Lawrence recorded his second RBI of the game after the Thoroughbreds scored off a wild pitch in the fourth.
Two runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh gave Skidmore enough separation, as the Regents only scored once more as Taylor also hit his second home run on the day.
