Easton Tosses Second Complete-Game Shutout as Rockford Pitching Staff Hits Two

LISLE, Ill. -- The Rockford University baseball team split a pair of games against Benedictine University on Tuesday in a NACC conference doubleheader, winning the first game 11-0 before falling short in the second game 13-3.

The Regents will return to action on Friday, May 1, against Concordia University Chicago at Regent Field for the last NACC doubleheader of the year.

Game One: Rockford 11, Benedictine 0

Kadin Bergstrom went 3-for-4 at the plate with one RBI. Trent Lawrence and Blaise Mace each totaled two hits with a team-high three RBIs each. Marcus Taylor added a hit with a two-RBI double.

Alex Easton pitched a gem on the mound and became the second pitcher on the RU pitching staff to toss a complete-game shutout this season, as Zach Fabis threw a complete-game shutout on Saturday, March 21, in the first game against Marian University, which resulted in a 2-0 win. Easton allowed five hits while striking out five batters.

No runs were plated in the first two innings of action until the Regents exploded with six runs in the third. Nate Burdin started off the explosive inning with an RBI single down the right field line. Later in the inning, Lawrence doubled to left center to score three more. Fabis and Mace ended the inning with an RBI single and an RBI double as Rockford led 6-0.

Rockford scored a run in both the fourth and fifth innings as Bergstrom had an RBI single to left field in the fourth, while Mace also tallied an RBI single to left field as the Regents went up 8-0.

The Regents plated their final three runs in the eighth with a two-RBI double to left field, along with another RBI from Mace as the Regents cruised to a win in the first game.

Game Two: Benedictine 13, Rockford 3

Bergstrom went 3-for-4 and built up his lead in the career home run record book with two more home runs, totaling three RBIs.

Nate Burdin started and pitched 2 2/3 innings, allowing seven hits and two earned runs with one strikeout. Drake Floden relieved Burdin in the third and pitched 1 2/3 innings, giving up one hit and three earned runs. Joey Bisesi entered in the fifth and allowed one hit and two runs. Brendan Fitzpatrick closed, pitching two-thirds of an inning and facing two batters.

Justin Nonnenman from Benedictine recorded an RBI single for the Eagles as they took a 1-0 lead after the first inning.

In the second, Benedictine scored twice on an earned and unearned run and continued scoring in the third with a two-RBI single to second base, RBI single to center field, and scoring an unearned run off a wild pitch as the Eagles led 7-0.

Bergstrom homered to left field to put the Regents on the board. Still, Benedictine continued to extend its lead, scoring four more in the fifth with a fielder's choice that drove in a run, a run scored on an error, a hit by pitch with the bases loaded, and an RBI walk, extending the Eagle lead to 11-1.

A sacrifice fly and scoring off a wild pitch scored the final two runs for Benedictine in the sixth. Bergstrom homered again for the Regents with a two-run home run to right field.
