Softball Falls Twice to Green Knights

DE PERE, Wis. - The Rockford University softball team (11-17, 3-11 NACC) dropped both games of its NACC doubleheader on Thursday afternoon at St. Norbert College (5-25, 5-11 NACC). St. Norbert was in control from start to finish in the opener. The Green Knights scored two runs in each of the first two innings and held the Regents to just three hits in the game en route to taking the opener 8-1. Rockford bounced back with three early runs to take a 3-0 lead in the nightcap. Unfortunately, the Green Knights scored the next seven runs en route to a 10-6 win and a sweep of the regular season series.

Recap Recap
Game 1
  • St. Norbert struck first with a pair of runs in both the first and second innings to take an early 4-0 lead. The Green Knights ripped a two-out, two-run double in the first and a two-out, two-run single in the second, to build their four-run lead.
  • The score remained unchanged until the fourth when St. Norbert tacked on two more runs. Again both runs came with two outs, but this time it was a pair of RBI singles that allowed the Green Knights to extend their lead to 6-0.
  • The Regents were finally able to scratch a run across in the top of the fifth inning. Jocelyn Callahan hit a one-out triple and Olivia Swanson drove in Callahan on a sacrifice fly, to make it a 6-1 ballgame.
  • Unfortunately, St. Norbert added a pair of unearned runs in the sixth en route to an 8-1 victory.
Game 2
  • The Regents opened game two with a run in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead. Emily Cox got things started with a double and later scored on a Michaela Spanbauer RBI single.
  • Rockford then tacked on two more runs off two hits in the top of the second. Isabella Intravaia led off the inning with a walk and then stole second to put herself in scoring position. Jocelyn Callahan followed with an RBI single and then also stole second with still no one out. Two batters later, Emily Down singled in Callahan to give the Regents a 3-0 advantage.
  • Unfortunately, the Green Knights struck for a trio of runs in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game at 3-3. The bulk of the runs came from a two-run home run off the bat of Paige Diercks. SNC would add one more run off a two-out single to tie the game heading into the top of the third.
  • The score remained the same until the Green Knights put up a four-spot in the bottom of the fourth. St. Norbert had just two hits in the inning but took advantage of a Rockford error and two walks to leap out to a 7-3 lead.
  • Rockford was able to cut the deficit in half with two runs of its own in the top of the fifth. Rockford capitalized on two St. Norbert errors to start the inning, and then used a Michaela Spanbauer sacrifice fly and a Breanna Collins RBI single to make it a 7-5 game.
  • Unfortunately, St. Norbert blew the game wide open with three more runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Green Knights had three hits in the frame, including a Christina Paleka two-run home run, to extend their lead to 10-5.
  • The Regents would add one run in the top of the seventh off a Breanna Collins RBI single, but it was not enough, as Rockford dropped the nightcap 10-6.
