Emily Down's Homer Not Enough as Regents Fall to Eagles

LISLE, Ill. - The Rockford University softball team dropped both games of its doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Benedictine University. The Regents fell 5-3 in 10 innings in game one and then dropped the nightcap by a final score of 5-0. Emily Down drove in all three of the Regents' runs on a three-run home run in the top of third. Unfortunately, Benedictine was able to tie it in the fifth and then win the game on a Taylor Oppenhuis walk-off home run in the bottom of tenth. Rockford was then shutout for only the second time this season, in a 5-0 loss in game two.

Recap Recap
Benedictine 5 Rockford 3 (10 Innings)
  • Benedictine broke the scoreless tie with a single run in the bottom of the second. The Eagles began the inning with a leadoff double and then scored a run on a bunt single to take an early 1-0 lead.
  • The Eagles' lead did not last long though, as Rockford struck for three runs in the top of the third. Candace Kipp got things started with a one-out single, and then Jocelyn Callahan walked to put runners on first and second. One batter later, Emily Down crushed a three-run home run, her second of the season, to give Rockford a 3-1 advantage.
  • The score remained unchanged until the bottom of the fifth. Benedictine had four total hits in the inning, including three straight, and scored a pair of runs to knot the game at 3-3.
  • The best chance for either team to score over the next five innings came in the top of the eighth. After two quick outs, Enedy Perez walked and Michaela Froehlich singled to put runners on the corners. Unfortunately, Benedictine struck out the next better to keep the game tied at 3-3.
  • The Eagles really struggled to get anything going offensively, but were able to capitalize on one big swing of the bat in the bottom of the tenth. With a runner on first and two outs, Taylor Oppenhuis hit the game-winning, two-run home run over the left field wall to give the Eagles a 5-3 victory.
Benedictine 5 Rockford 0
  • The Eagles once again scored first in game two. Benedictine's Colleen Schmit hit a two-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the first, to give the Eagles a quick 2-0 lead.
  • Benedictine would tack on an additional run in the bottom of the third. The Eagles had four straight hits in the inning, but could only muster a single run, to extend their lead to 3-0.
  • It seemed as through the Regents may cut into the deficit in the top of the fourth. Jocelyn Callahan and Emily Down led off the inning with a walk and a single to put runners on first and second with no one out. However, the Eagles were able to retire the next three batters to end the threat and keep it a 3-0 game.
  • Benedictine then tacked on two more runs off three hits in the fifth inning and took a commanding 5-0 advantage.
  • Unfortunately, the Regents had just one runner reach base in each of the last two innings and fell by a final score of 5-0.
