Regents Rally for Win versus SUNY Potsdam; Fall in Extras to Geneva

NAPLES, Fla. - The Rockford University softball team rallied from down five to defeat SUNY Potsdam 12-6 in its first game of the day, but then fell 9-8 in extra innings to Geneva College. The Regents were down 5-0 early in both games, but battled their way back each time. Rockford took the lead for good in the top of the fourth against SUNY Potsdam on a Judah Ortiz three-run double. The Regents tied the game in bottom of the sixth versus Geneva on a Jocelyn Callahan RBI double to force extras. Unfortunately, the Golden Tornadoes plated two runs in the eighth and went on to the game as Rockford fell to 2-2 on the season.

Recap Recap
Rockford 12 SUNY Potsdam 6
  • The game got off to a rough start for the Regents. Postdam scored five runs off four hits and capitalized of a pair RU errors to take a 5-0 lead after two innings of play.
  • Fortunately, the RU offense came to life with a four-run third inning. Jocelyn Callahan jumped-started the RU rally with an infield single, a stolen base and then scored on a Bear error. Rockford's other four runs came on a Judah Ortiz single and another Potsdam error that cleared the bases and made it a 5-4 game.
  • The Bears got one of those runs back in the bottom half of the inning, thanks to a Rockford error, to push their lead back to two at 6-4.
  • However, from that point on it was all Regents.
  • Rockford scored a trio of runs in the top of the fourth to take its first lead of the day. Olivia Lysaght, Tomi Hill, Jocelyn Callahan and Kariana Williams all singled in the frame. However, the big hit came with two outs off the bat of Judah Ortiz. Ortiz laced a three-run double into right field to put her team out in front 7-6.
  • The Regents tacked on another run in the top of the fifth off a Jocelyn Callahan RBI single to extend their lead to 8-6.
  • Rockford then added four insurance runs in the top of the seventh. The first run came on a Bear wild pitch and the other two on a Judah Ortiz RBI single to right.
  • Pitcher Bella Lima found her groove inside the circle over the final four innings. She allowed no runs off three hits during that time frame, and retired six straight batters as Rockford went on to win its second straight game.
Geneva 9 Rockford 8 (8 Innings)
  • Rockford again had a slow start to the game. The Regents allowed five runs off five hits and two errors to fall behind 5-0 heading into the third inning.
  • As was the case earlier today, Rockford rebounded for multiple runs over the next two innings.
  • The Regents struck for a trio of runs in the third to make it just a 5-3 ballgame. Bella Lima got things started with a two-run triple and then scored on a first and third play to chop the Golden Tornados' lead down to only two.
  • However, Geneva responded in the top of the fourth with two runs of its own off a two-run double by Lexi Zanic.
  • The scoring spree continued in the bottom of the fourth, with Rockford plating three more runs to make it one-run game. The Regents loaded the bases with one out on a walk and singles by Michaela Froehlich and Olivia Lysaght. One batter later, Jocelyn Callahan drove in a run on an infield single. Rockford added its other two runs off a Bella Lima RBI ground ball to short and a Golden Tornadoes error.
  • Following a scoreless fifth, the Regents tied the game with a run in the bottom of the sixth. Jocelyn Callahan knocked in the tying run on a one-out RBI double to center field.
  • Neither team scored in the seventh, so the game headed into extras tied at 7-7. Extra innings were played by the international tie breaker rule where a runner is placed on second base to begin each half inning.
  • Unfortunately, Geneva scored a pair of unearned runs off two Regent errors in the top of the eighth to retake the lead at 9-7.
  • Rockford was able to get a run back off an Alexis Schuldt sacrifice fly, but could not scratch across another and fell 9-8.
