Softball Splits with Wisconsin Lutheran to Open NACC Play

WAUWATOSA, Wis. - The Rockford University softball team won the opener 6-5 and then fell 3-2 on a walk-off RBI single to Wisconsin Lutheran College on Saturday afternoon. Rockford trailed 1-0 early in game one, but then scored six runs over a span of three innings en route to winning the opener. Game two was more of a pitchers' duel, as there were a total of just five runs combined between the two teams. Rockford led 1-0 and then again at 2-1, but the Warriors scored single runs in both the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings to steal game two and split the season series with the Regents for the second time in the last three years.

Recap Recap
Game 1
  • Wisconsin Lutheran's Alea Anhalt hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first to give the Warriors an early 1-0 lead.
  • The score remained unchanged until the Regents exploded for a three-run third inning. Rockford quickly loaded the bases on a pair of singles by Olivia Lysaght and Jocelyn Callahan and a Warrior error. Kariana Williams then tied the game on an infield RBI single. The Regents proceeded to take the lead on a Sophia Hulsey sacrifice fly and then made it a 3-1 game following a Chayton Krueger RBI single back up the middle.
  • The Regents tacked on another run in the top of the fourth off a Bella Lima solo home run over the left field wall.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran was able to get that run right back in the bottom half of the inning to cut the RU lead back down to two at 4-2.
  • Fortunately, Rockford added a pair of runs in the top of the fifth. Chayton Krueger had the big hit in the inning, an RBI double to center, to push Rockford's lead back out to three runs. One batter later, Judah Ortiz drove in what turned out to be a critical run on an RBI groundout to make it a 6-2 game.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran was however able to make things very interesting during its final three at bats. The Warriors plated a run in the fifth, sixth and seventh to get all the way back to within a single run. Fortunately, Rockford retired the final batter of the game in the seventh to seal the 6-5 victory.
Game 2
  • The nightcap of the doubleheader turned out to be more of a pitchers' duel than the opener. Neither team scored more than a single run in any inning and the Regents and Warriors combined to score just one run over the first four innings.
  • Rockford broke the scoreless tie in the top of the first inning. The Regents quickly loaded the bases with one out on a pair of singles by Bella Lima and Kariana Williams and a walk. A couple of batters later, Chayton Krueger came through with a clutch two-out RBI single to give her team a 1-0 lead.
  • RU starting pitcher Kariana Williams was in a groove early on in the game. Williams retired ten of 11 batters heading into the fifth, as Rockford maintained its 1-0 advantage.
  • However, the Warriors finally got on the board in the bottom of the fifth. WLC had just one hit in the inning, but was able to tie the game at 1-1.
  • Fortunately, Rockford got that run right back in the top of the sixth. Chayton Krueger started the frame with a single and then stole second to put herself in scoring position with one out. A couple of batters later, Lauren Zielinski drove in Krueger on a two-out RBI single into left.
  • The Warriors hit right back with a run in the bottom of the sixth on a Sommer Krull solo home run to once again tie the game.
  • After Rockford went down in order in the top of the seventh, WLC had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the seventh.
  • WLC had just one hit in the frame but put runners on second and third with one out after a hit batter, a sacrifice bunt, an RU error and a stolen base. Madison Heller then delivered a walk-off RBI single into right to win the game by a final score of 3-2.
