Regents Stumble at Aurora

AURORA, Ill. - The Rockford University softball team fell 8-0 and 3-2 on the road Sunday afternoon at Aurora University. Nothing seemed to go right for the Regents in the opener. Rockford had just one hit in the game and allowed six unearned runs. The nightcap however was extremely tight from start to finish. Starting pitcher Kariana Williams went the distance and allowed just one earned run in the game. The RU offense finally broke through with a pair of runs, including a solo home run by Olivia Lysaght, but it was not enough, as Aurora held on for the 3-2 victory and a sweep of the season series.

Recap Recap
Game 1
  • Aurora scored six runs over the first two innings to seize control of the game.
  • The Spartans struck for a trio of unearned runs in bottom of the first to grab a 3-0 lead.
  • Aurora then added three more unearned runs in the bottom of the second to extend its advantage to 6-0.
  • Unfortunately, Rockford just could not get anything going offensively the entire game. The Regents had just one hit in the opener and never got a runner past second base.
  • The Spartans would end the game in the bottom of the fifth on a walk-off two-run home run by Lily Komperda for the 8-0 win.
Game 2
  • The nightcap was a much lower scoring affair as the Spartans and Regents combined to score just five runs total.
  • Aurora again scored first with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. The Spartans had two hits in the frame and took advantage of a Regent error to grab a 2-0 lead.
  • Rockford finally got on the board with its first run of the day in the top of the fifth. The Regents quickly loaded the bases on a Sophia Hulsey single, a Payton Willenkamp double and a Spartan miscue. A couple of batters later, Chayton Krueger had an RBI fielder's choice to cut the Spartan lead down to 2-1.
  • However, Aurora recorded another unearned run in the bottom of the sixth to push its lead back to two at 3-1.
  • The Regents had one final chance to tie the game or take the lead in the top of the seventh. Olivia Lysaght got things started with a solo home run to chop the Aurora lead down to a single run. Rockford did get the tying run on base thanks to a Spartan error, but unfortunately, could not drive her in and ultimately fell by a final score of 3-2.
