Game Recap: Softball |

Sabres Claw Past Regents

FOND DU LAC, Wis. - The Rockford University softball team fell twice on the road Saturday to the Marian University Sabres. Game one belonged to the Sabres, as they scored two runs in the bottom of the first and never looked back. Marian went on to win the opener by a final score of 7-0. The nightcap had the exact opposite start to it as Rockford plated a pair of runs in the top of the first to take the early lead. However, it was a four-run fourth inning that catapulted Marain into the lead. Rockford would tie the game in the sixth, but ultimately fell 5-4 on a two-out, walk-off RBI double in the bottom of the seventh.

Recap Recap
Game 1
  • Marian scored in four of its six at bats and held the Regents to just four hits in the game.
  • The Sabres took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the first. Marian had just one hit in the inning but drew four walks to take a 2-0 advantage.
  • Marian added another run in the third and then essentially put the game away with a three-run fourth. The Sabres had three hits in the inning but also capitalized on three Rockford errors to grab a 6-0 lead.
  • Marian added one more run in the sixth en route to taking game one by a final score of 7-0.
Game 2
  • Rockford took its first least of the day with a two-run top of the first inning. Senior Michaela Froehlich came up with the big hit in the inning, cracking a two-run double into left center, to put the Regents out in front 2-0.
  • The score remained unchanged until Marian struck for four runs in the bottom of the third. The Sabres had six hits in the inning, including a two-run double of their own, to grab a 4-2 lead after three innings of play.
  • The Regents were able to cut the two-run deficit in half with a single run in the top of fourth. Chayton Krueger and Judah Ortiz got things started with back-to-back singles to put runners on first and second with no one out. Following a hit batsman to load the bases, Olivia Lysaght drove in a run on an RBI groundout to make it a 4-3 game.
  • Rockford then tied the game with a single run in the top of the sixth. Although the Regents had no hits in the inning, Rockford capitalized on a fielder's choice and a trio of walks, including an RBI walk by Jocelyn Callahan, to knot the game at 4-4.
  • Unfortunately, the Sabres were able to win the game in heartbreaking fashion in the bottom of the seventh. Marian drew a two-out walk, then stole second and won on walk-off RBI double.
