NAPLES, Fla. -- The Rockford University softball team split games against SUNY Cobleskill and Drew University. Rockford won the opening game 7-2 vs. SUNY Cobleskill and fell 10-1 to Drew University.
The Regents will return to action on Monday, March 9, vs. Rochester Institute of Technology at 9 a.m. EDT then will play Geneva College at 11 AM EDT.
Game One: Rockford 7, SUNY Cobleskill 2
Mia Cosentino went 3-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the Regents at the plate.
Brooklyn Lee,
Makayla Howard, and
Tayiah Scanlan all had two hits. Lee and
Payton Willenkamp each had one RBI.
Kendall Knoll got the start with four innings of work. Knoll punched out six batters allowing only one hit, allowed no runs, and was credited with the win.
Lorelei Monk entered in the fifth allowing two runs off of three hits, and
Neelah Vandeberg went on the hill in the final inning allowing one strikeout off two hits.
RBIs from Willenkamp and Lee gave the Regents a 2-0 lead early in their first inning of the season. The offense continued to roll as Cosentino recorded an RBI single to plate one run in the second.
Rockford was able to put the game away in the sixth, with three runs scored. Scanlan stole home followed by another RBI single from Cosentino, who also scored off a wild pitch. SUNY Cobleskill plated two runs in the bottom of the sixth, but could not catch the Regents en route to the win in their season-opener.
Game Two: Drew 10, Rockford 1
Tomi Hill,
Mia Cosentino,
Payton Willenkamp,
Neelah Vandeberg, and
Claire Shanahan all had one hit.
Claire Shanahan led the RU pitching staff with three strikeouts, allowing four runs, with just over three innings of work.
After one scoreless inning the Regents plated one run with an RBI single from Hill as Rockford led 1-0 after the second inning.
In the third inning, Drew plated one run to tie the game at one after three.
Unfortunately for the Regents, Drew's bats heated up, scoring three runs in the fourth inning to go up 4-1. Rockford struggled offensively, unable to score the rest of the game. Drew did not slow down offensively, with six more runs in the final three innings.
