Bergstrom Ties Home Run Record as Baseball Sweeps Wisconsin Lutheran

FRANKLIN, Wis. -- The Rockford University baseball team swept Wisconsin Lutheran College in a NACC doubleheader on Saturday, winning the first game 15-3 before completing the sweep, winning the second game 14-5. 

Kadin Bergstrom's three home runs combined in both of today's games now total 33 in his career, tying a program record held by Tony Olson (2002-05) and Joseph Stagowski (2022-25).

The Regents will return to action on Tuesday, April 14, when they will host Aurora University in a NACC doubleheader starting at noon CDT at Regent Field.

Game One: Rockford 15, Wisconsin Lutheran 3

Blaise Mace went a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate with one RBI. Kadin Bergstrom went 3-for-5 with four RBIs and a homer. Ryan Stary and Nate Burdin each went 2-for-4 as Burdin totaled two RBIs. Marcus Taylor had the other home run for the Regents, which was his lone hit of the game. 

Zach Fabis remains undefeated on the hill with six innings of work, allowing just two runs and forcing six strikeouts. Ayden Smith came in for relief in the eighth, allowing just one run while striking two batters out. 

Nate Burdin recorded an RBI off a fielder's choice in the second inning as Duke scored an unearned run, and Mace made it home as Rockford led 2-0 after the second. In the bottom of the inning, the Regents retired the side in order, which was the first of four for Rockford defensively for the game.

Mace scored the lone run for Rockford in the third with an RBI single to center field. Similar to the second, the Regents once again retired the side in order. 

Bergstrom launched a two-RBI homer in the fourth to extend the Regent lead 9-0 as the Regents again defensively retired the WLC batting lineup in order as they recorded nine consecutive outs. 

WLC plated two runs in the sixth with an RBI double to right center and a sacrifice fly to trim the Rockford lead to 5-2. 

The bats exploded for the Regents in the seventh and eighth innings. In the seventh, Taylor led off the inning with a home run to center field. Mace then plated a run, scoring off a wild pitch. Burdin then hit an RBI single to left field as the Regents ended the explosive seventh inning, as Duke scored on a wild pitch and Bergstrom recorded a two-RBI double to left field to put Rockford up 11-3. 

WLC plated its final run of the game with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh. 

Rockford built separation in the eighth as Lawrence scored on a throwing error, which was the first of four runs for the Regents. With the bases loaded, Derrick Hozey drew an RBI walk to put the Regents up 10, leading 13-3. Brady Norwood also drew an RBI walk, and Tommaso Franceschelli plated a run for the Regents as Rockford, for the fourth time in the game, retired WLC's bats in order to dominate the first game. 

Game Two: Rockford 14, Wisconsin Lutheran 5

Bergstrom went 4-for-6 at the plate with three RBIs and a home run. Burdin and Zach Duke each batted 3-for-5. Burdin had two RBIs while Duke had one. Lawrence led Rockford in RBIs with four, going 2-for-6 with a home run. Taylor homered again in the second game, going 2-for-5 with his solo home run being his one RBI.

Logan Koeller got the start on the mound, earning the win. Koeller threw for five innings, allowing two earned runs off four hits and forcing six strikeouts. Alex Easton came in for Koeller in the sixth, working two innings on the hill, allowing one hit and one strikeout. Kyle Koerner came in following Easton in the seventh, allowing one run off two hits, and Drake Floden recorded one hit and struck out one batter. 

Bergstrom put Rockford on the board first with an RBI single to left field. WLC scored off a sacrifice fly to plate an unearned run as the game was tied at one after the first inning. 

In the second, Burdin recorded an RBI on a fielder's choice as the Regents led 2-1. 

The Warriors took the lead in the fourth with a three-run home run to take a 4-2 lead after three. 

Bergstrom then went yard on a two-RBI homer in the fourth for the Regents to tie the game at four. 

An RBI triple from Burdin put the Regents back ahead 5-4 in the fifth. 

In the sixth and seventh innings, Taylor launched a solo homer to left field, and Fabis recorded a sacrifice fly as the Regents extended their lead, 7-4.

Rockford continued to extend its lead in the eighth when Lawrence tallied an RBI double down the left field line, and Bryce Stanton recorded an RBI. The Warriors recorded an RBI single in the bottom of the inning but did not plate any more runs. 

The Regents built up plenty of insurance runs in the ninth when Lawrence went yard on a three-run home run, followed by an RBI from Duke, and Stanton plating an unearned run on a passed ball.
