ROCKFORD, Ill. -- The Rockford University baseball team finished off its season series with the Aurora University Spartans on Thursday afternoon. The Spartans won handily, 14-1.
The Regents will return to action on Saturday, April 18, for a senior day doubleheader against St. Norbert starting at 12 p.m. CDT.
Aurora 14, Rockford 1
Bryce Stanton was 1-for-3 and scored the Regents' only run.
Zach Duke and
David Wilhite were both 1-for-2 with a single. Wilhite had the team's lone RBI.
Sidney Atkins pitched the first two-and-a-third innings for RU. He gave up seven hits and seven runs.
Nick Rich surrendered six runs in his brief appearance.
Logan Bennett,
Kyle Koerner, and
Hunter Pavia combined to finish the game, giving up just one run between them.
The Spartans put up three runs in the first inning. Ryan Buck smacked a three-run homer to right field to give Aurora an early 3-0 lead.
Rockford picked up its first run in the bottom of the second. Wilhite came through with two outs, driving in Stanton from second with a base hit up the middle.
The Spartans' offense exploded in the third. They belted nine hits, including four doubles and two homers, to put up ten runs in the inning and take a commanding 13-1 lead.
Bennett and Koerner righted the ship on the mound, holding the Spartans scoreless through the next three innings. Pavia gave up a run in the seventh to make it 14-1.
Unfortunately, the offense never got going, managing just three hits in the game, falling 14-1 to seal a season split with Aurora.
