Fabis Ties Win Record as Regents Sweep Lakeland

PLYMOUTH, Wis. -- The Rockford University baseball team swept Lakeland University in NACC action on Saturday. Rockford won the first game 10-7 before completing the sweep in the second game, shutting out the Muskies 4-0.

The Regents will return to action on Tuesday, April 25, for a NACC doubleheader, facing Benedictine University at noon & 3 p.m. CDT.

Game One: Rockford 10, Lakeland 7

Trent Lawrence had another great day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Kadin Bergstrom and Zach Duke each had three RBIs to lead the team, and both went 1-for-4.

Zach Fabis earned his eighth win of the year, which now ties a program record for single-season wins on the mound. Fabis threw for six innings with seven strikeouts and allowed four earned runs off 10 hits. Ayden Smith went on the hill in the seventh, giving up two hits with two strikeouts. Kyle Koerner then worked the final two innings of action, allowing one hit while punching out two batters.

Lakeland went up 2-0 with an RBI single and a two-RBI triple and extended its lead in the bottom of the third with an RBI single through the left side as the Muskies took a 3-0 lead after three innings.

Rockford's offense heated up in the fourth with seven runs. The fourth started with a Lawrence RBI single to left field. The Regents then scored three-straight in three consecutive at-bats, started with an RBI walk from Duke, an RBI single by Ryan Stary, and a sacrifice fly from David Wilhite as the Muskies never regained the lead. Bergstrom ended the explosive inning with a three-RBI double to right-center.

The Muskies responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single down the right field line and a two-run home run to left field as the Regents led 7-6. Lakeland tied the game at seven, scoring off a wild pitch.

Duke hit a two-RBI double down the left field line in the seventh, while Lawrence recorded a sacrifice fly to left field in the eighth, as neither team scored in the ninth.

Game Two: Rockford 4, Lakeland 0

Bergstrom went 2-for-4 to lead the team in hits. Fabis had two RBIs and batted 1-for-3.

Logan Koeller was stellar on the hill, earning the win with 8 innings of work, striking out 11, and allowing just 2 hits and no runs. Sidney Atkins got his fifth save of the year with two strikeouts in the ninth.

Zach Fabis knocked a two-RBI double to right center as the Regents jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after the first inning.

Both offenses were silent until the ninth, when Blaise Mace singled through the right side to tally an RBI. Bryce Stanton then plated the final insurance run for the Regents with an RBI single up the middle.
