APPLETON, Wis. - The Rockford University women's volleyball team dropped a heartbreaker in four sets on Friday afternoon to the Northland College Jills. Rockford came out firing on all cylinders, winning the first set 25-21. The second set was even closer, with the Regents and Jills needing extra points to decide a winner. Unfortunately, it was the Jills who scored the final two points for the 26-24 win. Northland would then go on to win the third set, the fourth set and ultimately the match. Statistically, it was Northland who had the advantage in nearly every single category. The Jills led the Regents in kills (53-35), digs, (62-50), hitting percentage (.228-.173) and assists (45-30).
- Following a back and forth start to the match, Rockford used an 8-1 run to jump out to a 14-7 lead. Senior Nicole Eggers delivered back-to-back-to-back service aces to close out the run.Â
- However, with the Regents leading 16-9, Northland went on an 8-1 spurt of its own and tied the set at 17-17.
- The Jills were then able to take a 20-19Â lead, their first since very early in the match.Â
- Fortunately, Rockford closed on a 6-1Â run to win the set and grab a 1-0 advantage.Â
- The first half of the second set seemingly belonged to the Jills. Northland scored five of the first seven points and eventually extended its advantage to 16-10.Â
- However, Rockford continued to fight and claw its way back into the set. The Regents promptly went on an 11-4 run, to take their first lead of the set at 21-20. Four different Regents had a kill during that span, led by two apiece from Della Crain and Alexis Brashaw.Â
- The Regents and Jills went back and forth until the set was once again tied, this time at 24-24.Â
- Unfortunately, Northland scored the final two points of the set, to tie the match at 1-1.Â
- The third set was close early on, but Northland seized control midway through.Â
- With the Jills holding a 10-9 lead, Northland went on a 15-1 run to win the set and take a 2-1 advantage.Â
- Rockford then fell behind 10-5 to begin the fourth set.Â
- However, the Regents slowly chipped away at the Jill lead, until they were able to tie it at 15-15. It was once again Della Crain who led the charge with a pair of kills.
- With Northland now leading 21-17, Rockford scored five straight points to retake the lead at 22-21.Â
- Unfortunately, the Jills scored the final four points to win the set and the match.
- Della Crain finished with a team-high 9 kills, 2 digs, 1 assist and 1 block.Â
- Melody Moreno added a team-high 13 digs, 7 kills, 4 assists and 1 ace.
- Alexis Brashaw tallied 6 kills on just 12 attack attempts, 2 blocks and a dig.Â
- Jessica Witkowski had 11 assists, 7 digs, 2 aces and 2 kills.
