Women's Volleyball Downs Dominican

RIVER FOREST, Ill. -- The Rockford University women's volleyball team swept Dominican University on Thursday evening. Set scores were 25-19, 25-19, 25-18.

Offensively, Jayce Shaw and Ashley Miller tallied eight kills each, and Jalyn Rhodes added six. Leila Cooks and Isabella Valdes each tallied double-digit totals in the assists column for the second time this week, with 17 and 15, respectively. Keara Ross and Rhodes finished with three aces each, and Cooks added two.

For RU defensively, Ross and Miller made nine digs each, and Amelia Rodriguez and Ashley Mersch each added one block.

Tied at 9-9, the Regents started to pull away in the first with back-to-back kills from Shaw to start a 9-2 scoring run. The Stars responded with a 4-0 spurt of their own before the Regents responded with two kills from Mersch and Miller. Three errors by DU, finished off by a kill from Miller, gave RU the first-set victory.

The momentum from the first set carried over into the second as RU built a 19-7 lead. DU responded with a 12-5 run until a kill by Rhodes stopped a DU comeback.

The third and final set had its share of back-and-forth action in the beginning, with two lead changes as the Stars built up a 12-10 lead. The Regents then responded, scoring five unanswered points starting with a kill from Mersch and finishing off with kills from Rodriguez and Miller. After this stretch, the Regents never gave back the lead, completing their second sweep of the week.

The Regents will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 11, with a noon NACC match vs Lakeland University at the Seaver Center.
