Rockford, Ill. -- The Rockford University men's soccer team faced off against the Beloit College Buccaneers on Wednesday afternoon at Sam Greeley Field. The game ended in a 1-1 tie, with Rockford holding onto the Stateline Cup after winning in ceremonial penalty kicks.
The Regents got things going first, scoring in the 26th minute off a
Rejhan Jakupi goal, assisted by
Jose Lane Mendoza.Â
Beloit was unable to score in the first period, tallying 10 more shots then Rockford in the first half (14 to 4).Â
Heading into the second half up 1-0, the Regents fell back into a prevent defense. They were again outshot by the Buccaneers (17 to 7), but goalkeeper
Wesley Pritzlaff kept Beloit at bay with eight second half saves.Â
Rockford kept their lead until the 89th minute, as Beloit was able to tie the game off a Serhat Ayebe goal. There were multiple shots in the finally minute, but no one was able to break the tie.
To declare a Stateline Cup winner the two teams entered a penalty shootout (does not count for NCAA records). The Regents knocked in four of their five tries and
Wesley Pritzlaff made two timely saves to secure victory and bring the Stateline Cup back to Rockford.
The Regents will return to action on Friday, Sept. 12, with a 4:30 p.m. CDT game at Sam Greeley Field against Maranatha Baptist.
