Multiple Records Broken as Softball Sweeps Alverno

MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- The Rockford University softball team swept Alverno College in a NACC doubleheader on Sunday. The Regents pulled away late in the first game, winning 10-5, and won the second game 24-16.

The Regents will return to action on Thursday, April 2, against non-conference opponent, Wheaton College at 3 & 5 p.m. CDT.

Game One: Rockford 10, Alverno 5

Tomi Hill and Liz Mois both went 2-for-5, each with two RBIs at the plate. Mois and Kieran Madigan both went yard. Madigan had four RBIs. 

Kendall Knoll spent six innings in the circle and got the win. She struck out three batters, gave up nine hits, and five runs. Lorelei Monk pitched in the final inning, striking one batter out and allowing just one hit. 

Alverno plated the first run off a sacrifice bunt in the second inning. Hill put the Regents on the board in the third with an RBI single to center field to tie the game at one. 

Nadya Hudson gave Alverno the lead back with a home run in the fourth, taking a 2-1 lead. 

The Regents responded with an explosive fifth inning. Mois recorded an RBI double to center field. Mia Cosentino then singled up the middle to tally an RBI to give the Regents their first lead of the game, leading 3-2. Madigan then gave Rockford separation, hitting a grand slam to extend the Regent lead to 7-2. 

Alverno homered in the fifth, followed by a Mois home run in the sixth as the Regents extended their lead to 8-3. 

Two more runs for Alverno in the fifth cut the Regents' lead to three at 8-5, but RBI doubles from Brooklyn Lee and Mois put the game away for the Regents.

Game Two: Rockford 24, Alverno 16

Mois broke the single game home run record for the Regents with three, which ties the NACC record with seven other individuals. Mois also tied the program and NACC record in single game hits, totaling five. She went 5-for-7 with six RBIs. Lee and Olivia Lysaght both went 4-for-6. Lysaght had six RBIs while Lee was just one back with five. 

As a team the Regents recorded a program-high six home runs and drew 14 walks, which also set a new program record.

McKenna Morris got the start pitching with 3.1 innings of action giving up four earned runs off eight hits. Monk then came in for Morris and saw one inning giving up four runs, four hits, and striking out one batter. Knoll then came in the game with one inning of work giving up five runs and five hits. Neelah Vandeberg closed the game among the Rockford pitching staff and got the win allowing just one run and two hits in the final 1.2 innings. 

Rockford scored one run in each of the first two innings, with an RBI double from Willenkamp in the first and Linnea Nelson scoring from third off a wild pitch. Alverno scored two unearned runs in the second to tie the game. Alverno took its first lead of the game in the third with an RBI single, taking a 3-2 lead. 

Nine runs between Rockford and Alverno were plated in the fourth. Mois tied the game at three with an RBI single, followed by an RBI walk from Willenkamp, ended by a Lysaght grand slam to put the Regents up 8-3. An RBI double and two-RBI homer for Alverno made it 8-6 Regents. 

Alverno then had an explosive fifth inning, plating six runs, started off by scoring off a wild pitch, a three-run home run, followed by another home run, ended with a sacrifice fly as the Regents suddenly trailed 10-8. 

The Regents regained the lead once again scoring six runs in the sixth started off with another home run from Mois which plated three, an RBI walk from Nelson, and a two-RBI double from Madigan to take a 14-12 lead. For Alverno, two RBI singles, and a home run gave Alverno the lead back 16-14, as Alverno did not score the remainder of the game. 

Rockford scored 10 runs in the seventh as Lee went yard with a two-run home run followed by Mois hitting her second home run of the game to grab the Regents the lead for good. Lysaght homered for the second time of the game which scored two runs. Rockford rounded out the scoring with a three-RBI double from Lee who eventually scored as a result of a wild pitch. Mois plated the last run for the Regents with a home run which set a new program record.
