Big Game Two Powers Softball to Split with Edgewood

ROCKFORD, Ill. -- The Rockford University softball team took on the Edgewood University Eagles in a NACC doubleheader on Sunday. The Regents were beaten 14-5 in game one and bounced back with a dominant 11-3 win in game two.

The Regents will return to action on Tuesday, April 14, for two games against Maranatha Baptist starting at 3:00 p.m. CDT.

Game One: Edgewood 14, Rockford 5

Tomi Hill notched two singles in her 2-for-3 outing in the leadoff spot. Brooklyn Lee was 1-for-1 with two RBI. Payton Willenkamp also drove in a run on her 1-for-2 game from the plate.

The Regent's starting pitcher in the first game was Claire Shanahan. She gave up five earned runs in two-and-a-third. Lorelei Monk went the rest of the way, giving up seven runs.

Edgewood scored early and often in this one and put up runs in all five innings, starting with three in the first.

Hill led off the bottom of the first with a single and was moved to second by a Lee sac bunt. She scored from second off a Liz Mois grounder that was mishandled by the second baseman. The score was 3-1 going into the second.

The Eagles added two runs in each of the second and third innings to take a 7-1 lead. Rockford scored two of its own in the third, with Hill crossing home plate off of a wild pitch and Lee scoring from third courtesy of a Willenkamp sac fly to left to make it 7-3.

The Edgewood offense could not be contained, pouring seven more runs over the next two innings. Lee drove in Mia Cosentino and Sophia Hulsey with a base hit up the middle to give RU two runs in the fourth.

Rockford was unable to cut into the nine-run lead in the fifth, falling 14-5 in five innings.

Game Two: Rockford 11, Edgewood 3

Linnea Nelson was a welcome addition to the lineup, going 2-for-3 with a double, triple, and three RBI. Hill went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Mois singled twice, drove in a run, and stole a base.

Kendall Knoll started on the rubber in the second game. She only surrendered two earned runs across five innings and earned her fourth win of the season.

Edgewood kicked things off with a run in the first to take a 1-0 lead.

The Regents answered back with five of their own in the bottom of the inning. Mois' RBI single up the middle scored Lee from second. She scored off an Eagles' error, and then Nelson tripled to left center to drive in two runs of her own. She then scored off a passed ball to put RU up 5-1.

Both teams added two more in the second. Willenkamp brought Hill and Lee home with a base knock through the right side to make it a 7-3 Regents' lead.

The Eagles wouldn't score again. Knoll and the defense shut them out down the stretch. RU tacked on one run in the fourth when Alexis Schuldt scored off of a Lee sac fly.

Rockford closed it out in the fifth. Knoll scored on a wild pitch and then Nelson kept up her bat going, driving in Kieran Madigan with a double to left center. Hill singled to left to score Nelson and hand the Regents an 11-3 win in five innings.
