ROCKFORD, Ill. -- The Rockford University softball team swept Maranatha Baptist University in a nonconference doubleheader on Tuesday at Regent Field, winning the first game 28-0 before winning the second game 33-0 to break the single-game record for runs scored in a game, breaking the previous record from April 7, 2009 vs. Maranatha Baptist.
The Regents will return to action on Saturday, April 18, when they will face St. Norbert College on the road with the first pitch set for noon CDT.
Game One: Rockford 28, Maranatha Baptist 0
Olivia Lysaght,
Sophia Hulsey, and
Tomi Hill all had three hits.
Lorelei Monk and
Kara McMullin each had two hits and both had a team-high five RBIs each. As a team, the Regents also broke the single-game record for triples with five.
Kendall Knoll got the start in the circle with two innings of work allowing just one hit with four strikeouts and was credited with the win.
Lorelei Monk came in the third and worked three scoreless frames forcing six strikeouts and no hits.
Rockford got off to a quick start when
Brooklyn Lee knocked an RBI triple to left field to plate the first run for the Regents. Rockford was able to load the bases and scored four runs. Lysaght and Knoll were both hit by pitches while Hulsey and
Linnea Nelson all drew walks with the bases loaded. Howard then scored off a two-RBI single to plate two more Regent runs to put them ahead 7-0.
Lysaght then hit an RBI single up the middle followed by a Hulsey RBI double to put in two more runs for the Regents.
In the third, the Regents scored 15 runs. They were able to reload the bases as McMullin was hit by a pitch to score the first run of the inning for the Regents.
Kaylee Jarrard then hit an RBI single up the middle. Lysaght and Hulsey then drew RBI walks with the bases loaded again as the Regents extended their lead to 13. A two-RBI double from Monk and two-RBI triple from Nelson put Rockford up 17-0.
Alexis Schuldt then entered the game and recorded a sacrifice fly. A pair of RBI singles from Lysaght and Hulsey, along with a three-RBI triple from Monk, extended the Rockford lead to 24-0 as the Regents batted around in the inning.
After a scoreless fifth inning, Rockford scored its final four runs with a three-RBI triple from McMullin to seal the first game.
Game One: Rockford 33, Maranatha Baptist 1
Tayiah Scanlan went 4-for-5 and tied a program record seven RBIs. Tying Jessica Starr's record from April 29, 2008 against Maranatha Baptist. As a team, the Regents also broke the RBI record with 31. Breaking the previous record of 27 vs. Maranatha Baptist from April 27, 2009.
Claire Shanahan was the starting pitcher throwing for three innings allowing just one run off four hits with three strikeouts.
Neelah Vandeberg came in the fourth with the final two innings of work striking one batter out with no hits.
Rockford put the game away early with 16 runs in the first inning. With the bases loaded Vandeberg was hit by a pitch to score the first run. As a team, the Regents broke the single-game record as a team being hit by pitches with 14 in the second game, breaking the previous record by nine and set a NACC record as well, breaking that by nine as well. The Regents then scored four consecutive runs from Shanahan,
Mia Cosentino, Knoll, and Nelson as they all drew RBI walks. Cosentino then scored off a wild pitch. Scanlan and Mois both ran the bases after they both knocked balls toward the warning track to both hit inside-the-park home runs. The Regents then scored two more runs as Knoll reached first on an error, allowing for two more Regent runs to score. Knaak then singled down the left field line and Scanlan reached first on a fielders choice to tally another RBI, as the Regents again batted around in the inning.
Maranatha Baptist scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the first with an RBI single to left center.
The Regent offense did not stop, scoring six more runs with RBI walks from Nelson and Knaak. Scanlan then knocked an RBI single to right field. Rockford ended the inning with a sacrifice fly from Hulsey and an RBI walk from Vandeberg as Rockford led 22-1 after two innings.
In the third inning the Regents again plated two RBI walks and Hulsey was hit by a pitch. McMullin then had an RBI off a fielders choice, followed by RBI single bunts from Shanahan and Cosentino, ended by Knoll getting hit by a pitch to make it 29-1.
Rockford scored its final four runs of the game in the fourth with an RBI from McMullin, Shanahan getting hit by pitch with the bases loaded, and ended with a two-RBI double up the middle from Jarrard.
