RIVER FOREST, Ill. -- The Rockford University softball team faced Concordia University Chicago in a NACC doubleheader on Monday. Rockford fell 13-8 in the first game and was unable to finish the second due to darkness. The Regents currently hold an 11-8 lead entering the top of the seventh inning, and will finish the inning at a later date.
The Regents are back in action on Thursday, April 9, when they will face Marian University in a NACC doubleheader on the road starting at 2 p.m. CDT.
Concordia Chicago 13, Rockford 8
Payton Willenkamp batted 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
Brooklyn Lee,
Sophia Hulsey, and
Kieran Madigan all totaled two hits.
Olivia Lysaght and
McKenna Morris had two RBIs to tie Willenkamp.
McKenna Morris started in the circle and pitched one inning, surrendering seven earned runs off seven hits.
Kendall Knoll finished the day in the circle with five innings of work, giving up four earned runs and forcing one strikeout.
The bats were hot early for the Regents with an RBI single from Willenkamp to put Rockford ahead 1-0. A two-RBI homerun from Lysaght and a homer from Morris put Rockford up 4-0 in the first.
The Cougars put together an impressive offensive performance of their own with an RBI double down the left field line, a two-RBI single up the middle, an RBI single to left field, an RBI single to center field, and plating a run on a fielder's choice to plate five runs as CUC led 5-4 after the first.
Rockford responded with three runs in the second as
Tomi Hill recorded an RBI off a fielder's choice, along with both Willenkamp and Morris both scoring as a result of RBI walks as the Regents regained the lead, 7-5.
CUC continued the high-scoring affair, scoring on another fielder's choice, plating two runs, and recording an RBI single as the Cougars led 8-7 after two innings.
Unfortunately for the Regents, CUC's bats remained hot, plating two more runs in the third with an RBI double to center field and scoring off a wild pitch. Rockford slowed down offensively, only plating one more run in the game in the fourth as Madigan singled to right field.
After four scoreless innings, the Cougars built up insurance in the sixth with a two-RBI double and an RBI single to right field as CUC took game one.
