FOND DU LAC, Wis. -- The Rockford University softball team split a pair of games with Marian University, falling short in the first game 7-0 before winning the second game 3-1 to split the series and hand the Sabres their first conference loss.
The Regents are back in action on Saturday, April 11, when they will face Wisconsin Lutheran College here at Regent Field in a NACC doubleheader starting at noon.
Game One: Marian 7, Rockford 0
Brooklyn Lee and
Payton Willenkamp each had one hit and also had both Regent hits.
Kendall Knoll stayed in the circle for all six innings of action, allowing six earned runs off 11 hits and punching out three batters.
Marian plated two runs in the third with an RBI and an RBI single in the third inning as the Sabres took a 2-0 lead after three.
An RBI single up the middle next inning for Marian extended the Sabre lead to 3-0.
In the fifth, the Sabres scored two more runs with two RBI singles, one through the right side and the other through the left side, to take a 5-0 lead.
The Sabres plated their final two runs of the game, scoring off a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly to take game one.
Game Two: Rockford 3, Marian 1
Willenkamp batted 2-for-3 and had the lone RBI for the Regents.
Tayiah Scanlan also had two hits, going 2-for-2 at the plate.
Claire Shanahan went the distance in the circle, allowing just one run off four hits, forcing three strikeouts, and got the win.
Rockford scored its first run with an RBI single from Willenkamp as the Regents led 1-0 after the first inning.
Six scoreless frames later, the Sabres launched a home run to left center to tie the game at one after four innings of action to score their only run of the game.
After two more scoreless innings, the Regents regained the lead, scoring two in the seventh with Scanlan crossing the plate on an unearned run and Lee scoring off a wild pitch from third to extend the Regent lead, 3-1.
In the bottom of the seventh, Rockford retired the side in order to earn a split with Marian.
