ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Rockford University women's volleyball team battled hard but came up short on Friday night against the third-place Edgewood College Eagles. Despite what the final score might indicate, Rockford gave Edgewood all it could handle throughout the night. The Regents were within striking distance in all three sets, but unfortunately, Edgewood closed each set strong and won the match 25-23, 25-15, 25-16.
- Rockford led for a majority of the first set.Â
- The Regents began the match on a 5-2 run, led by a trio of kills from Alex Burton.Â
- With the set now tied at 8-8, Rockford scored seven of the next eight points to take its largest lead of the set at 15-9. Della Crain and Alexis Brashaw led the charge with three and two kills respectively.Â
- The Eagles however would battle all the back and eventually retake the lead at 18-17.Â
- The set continued its back and forth nature over the next few points with both teams holding the lead.Â
- With the match now tied at 20-20, Edgewood scored the next two points to retake the lead.
- Rockford and Edgewood then alternated scoring one point each for the remainder of the set, as the Eagles took the first set 25-23.
- Edgewood opened the second set with a 10-3 run to grab an early 7-point lead.
- After a few points back and forth, Rockford scored five straight points to pull back within two at 13-11. Della Crain again led the Regent attack with a pair of kills.
- With Edgewood now holding a 19-15 advantage, the Eagles scored the final six points to win the second set 25-15 and take a 2-0 lead.
- The third set had a similar start to it as the second, with Rockford quickly falling behind 11-4.
- However, the Regents promptly went on an 8-1 run to tie the set at 12-12. Alex Burton recorded a team-high two kills over that span.Â
- The two schools would then trade points until Edgewood was able to build itself a slight edge at 18-14.Â
- After a Regent timeout, Rockford scored the next point to pull back within three.Â
- Unfortunately, that was as close as the Regents would get for the remainder of the match, as Edgewood went on to win the third set 25-16Â and the match 3-0.
- Della Crain finished with 7 kills, 2 digs, 1 ace and 1 block.
- Alex Burton tallied a team-high 9 kills and 1 dig.Â
- Nicole Eggers had 4 kills on 10 attempts for a .400 hitting percentage, a match-high 6 blocks and 3 digs.Â
- Jessica Witkowski had another double-double with 10 digs and 10 assists.
