APPLETON, Wis. - The Rockford University women's volleyball team defeated Mount Mary 3-1 (25-15, 22-25, 25-17, 25-21) on Friday morning in its first of four matches this weekend at the Lawrence University Invitational. Rockford played extremely well throughout the match, especially at the net. The Regents had an impressive 45 kills compared to just 28 for the Blue Angels. Rockford also smashed home a season-high 17 service aces, while surrendering just 7 to Mount Mary.
- Rockford got off to a fast start in the opening set, jumping out to an early 6-2 lead. Rockford used a 5-0 spurt over that span, led by a kill each from Alexis Brashaw and Melody Moreno.Â
- With the Regents now leading 11-9, Rockford used a 7-1 run to take control of the set.
- Mount Mary was unable to get any closer than seven the rest of the way, as Rockford won the opening set 25-15.
- The early portion of the second set saw Mount Mary leap out to a quick 11-5 lead.Â
- With Rockford still trailing 15-7, the Regents ran off 11 straight points and retook the lead for the first time since the opening few points. Melody Moreno tallied a trio of kills over that span, while Della Crain chipped in a pair of aces.Â
- The Regents built their lead up to as many as four at 22-18, before Mount Mary closed the set on a 7-0 run of its own and knotted the match at 1-1.Â
- Fortunately, Rockford rebounded with a strong start to the third set. The Regents opened on a 5-1 run and continued to maintain their four-point lead at 16-12.
- After the Blue Angels made it a 16-13 game, Rockford used another 5-1 spurt to take their largest lead thus far in the set. Della Crain led the way with a pair of kills.
- Mount Mary was able to get back to within four at 21-17, but Rockford scored the final four points to seal the 25-17 win and take a 2-1 lead.Â
- The fourth set had a similar start as the third, with Rockford jumping out to a 6-2 advantage.Â
- However, the Blue Angels proceeded to score the next four points to tie the set at 6-6.Â
- The set continued to go back and forth until the final five points, as neither team led by more than three.
- With Mount Mary clinging to a 21-20 advantage, Rockford scored the last five points of the match, winning the third set 25-20 and the match 3-1.Â
- Melody Moreno recorded her first double-double of the season. She finished with 12 kills, a season-high 12 digs, 1 ace and 1 assist.Â
- Della Crain tallied 12 kills, 6 digs, 4 aces, 1 block and 1 assist.Â
- Jessica Witkowski had a match-high 20 assists, 10 digs, 2 aces and a kill.Â
- Nicole Eggers finished with a career-high 6 aces, 5 kills, 3 digs and a block.Â
