Women's Volleyball Improves to 2-0 after a Thrilling 5-Set Victory

LAKE FOREST, Ill. - The Rockford University women's volleyball team won its second straight match to open the season by a final score of 3-2 over Lake Forest College. Rockford never trailed in the first set and only briefly fell behind in the second, to jump out to a quick 2-0 lead. However, the tables turned in Lake Forest's favor in the third and fourth sets. The Foresters led nearly wire to wire in both and tied the match at 2-2. Fortunately, Rockford bounced back to win the fifth set and the match (25-21, 25-19, 18-25, 18-25, 16-14).

  • Rockford opened the match scoring the first four points, capped off by a Melody Moreno service ace. 
  • The Regents then used 5-0 spurt midway through the set to extend their lead to 13-5. Melody Moreno led the charge with a trio of kills. 
  • However, Lake Forest answered with an 8-2 run of its own to pull all the way back to within two at 15-13. 
  • With the score now tied at 21-21, Rockford closed the set the same way it opened it, with a 4-0 run bookended by a pair of Melody Moreno kills to take a 1-0 lead. 
  • The second set went back and forth with neither team leading by more than three until midway through. 
  • Rockford used a 5-0 run with the set tied at 14 to take the largest lead thus far for either team. 
  • The Regents pushed their lead up to as many as seven points before ultimately winning the second set 25-19. 
  • The third set had a similar flow to it with both teams leading at various points early on. 
  • With Lake Forest holding a slim 17-16 lead, the Foresters closed on an 8-2 run to win the third set 25-18. 
  • Rockford got off to a rocky start in the fourth set falling behind quickly 6-0. 
  • The Foresters steadily extended their lead up to as many as nine at 18-9. 
  • However, the Regents began to make one final push down the stretch. Rockford scored nine of the next twelve points to claw its way back to within three at 21-18. Three different Regents tallied kills over that span, led by two from Madisen Perry
  • Unfortunately, Lake Forest scored the final four points to win the set and tie the match at 2-2. 
  • The fifth set was extremely tight from start to finish. Rockford scored the first two points and held onto the lead until Lake Forest ran off four straight points to leap in front 8-6. 
  • Rockford responded with a 5-1 run of its own to retake the lead. Melody Moreno, Ashley Miller and Tamsy Leverton all had a kill over that span. 
  • The two teams traded points until Rockford had a pair of match points at 14-12. 
  • However, Lake Forest spoiled both and tied the set at 14-14. 
  • Fortunately, Rockford answered right back scoring the final two points of the match, including an Amelia Rodriguez ace for the winning point at 16-14. 
Stat Leaders
  • Madisen Perry finished with a match-high 19 kills and an impressive .395 hitting percentage. She also added 4 digs and a block. 
  • Melody Moreno added 10 kills, 14 digs and 2 aces. 
  • Leila Cooks tallied a team-high 28 assists, 15 digs, 2 kills and an ace.
  • Jasmine Landberg had a team-high 15 digs and 3 assists.
