ROCKFORD, Ill. -- The Rockford women's volleyball team won its conference opener in a five-set match to Concordia University Chicago, on Wednesday at the Seaver Center. Set scores were 25-23, 25-22, 22-25, 14-25, 15-13.
Tamsy Leverton powered the offense with a team-high 14 kills, while
Amelia Rodriguez and
Jayce Shaw added 11 and 9 kills respectively. Rodriguez also recorded two blocks as did
Ashley Mersch.
With assists,
Leila Cooks and
Isabella Valdes dished out 22 and 21 assists. Defensively,
Keara Ross totaled 25 digs followed closely by
Ashley Miller with 20 and Cooks with 14.
RU took the first set after trailing 18-14. RU scored six unanswered to take the 20-18 lead with a kill by Shaw. CUC then tied the game, once at 20-20, then 23-23, until a kill by Miller and attack error on CUC ended the first with a Regents victory.
The second set saw scoring runs from both CUC and RU. After a 19-12 Regents lead, the Cougars scored five straight to pull to within two, making it 19-17. However, the Regents were able to fend off the rally from the cougars with a kill from Shaw to win the second set.
CUC took sets three and four to force a fifth set. RU trailed 7-5 before scoring four straight to claim the lead 9-7. Both teams went back-and-forth as CUC tied the game at 13-13, but an attack error from CUC followed by a kill from Miller won it for the Regents.
The Regents will return to action on Thursday, Oct. 2, with a 7 p.m. CDT NACC contest against Aurora at the Seaver Center.
