Phil Ludkowski was a member of the Rockford University men’s soccer team from 1974–1977 and helped establish the program as one of the most dominant in school history. Ludkowski helped to ignite a string of eleven Northern Illinois Iowa Conference Championships over a span of thirteen years, beginning with his junior and senior seasons in 1976 and 1977. He was also a member off the 1976 team that earned a berth in the NAIA District #20 Playoffs for the first time since 1965.

Ludkowski was a highly decorated collegiate athlete throughout his playing career at Rockford, earning multiple honors in each of his four years. He earned First Team All-NIIC honors in 1974, 1976 and 1977 along with being named honorable mention All-NIIC in 1975. Ludkowski was also named to the All-Illinois Soccer Team in 1975 and 1976 (honorable mention) and to the second team in 1977. He then earned NAIA District #20 All-Star status in 1974 (second team), 1975 (honorable mention), 1976 (first team) and 1977 (first team). The awards continued to roll in as Ludkowski was tabbed a first team selection in 1976 and 1977 by the Illinois Sports Information Directors for both its College Division All-Star team and its All-Scholastic team. Ludkowski concluded his senior season by being recognized at the national level by multiple organizations. In 1977 he was a Second Team All-American selection, a First Team NAIA Area III All-Star and was named an Honorable Mention All-Mideast College Soccer All-Star.
